Invasion Anniversary: Ukraine, Taiwan Stand United Against Authoritarianism

One the eve of the anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Vincent Chao, Taipei City Councilor, and former Director of the Political Division of Taiwan’s Representative Office in the U.S., speaks to Taiwan Talks about increasing international support for Ukraine’s resistance. Chao also discusses the similarities between Ukraine and Taiwan, as both nations tackle existential threats from their giant authoritarian neighbors. He also shares how the determination of the Ukrainian people is boosting morale amongst democracies. Chao expects more global support to be on the way, from F-16s, HIMARS, to other advanced weaponry. As Taiwan continues to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, Chao also talks about ongoing cooperation between the two countries and the pivotal role Taiwan can play in the rebuilding of Ukraine once the war is over. Also, representing Taiwan at the Munich Security Conference, Chao speaks about how protecting Taiwan and maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait is now a priority for many countries that participated as parallels continue to be drawn between the threats both democracies face. Chao is also a fellow at the Asia Program and China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
