Wide-Ranging Taiwan-US Trade Deal Signed, Opposition Pushing Back
Taiwan and the US have signed a sweeping trade agreement that lowers Taiwan’s tariff rate to an average of 12.3% and commits Taiwan to major investment and US$85 billion in US purchases through 2029. The pact also references Taiwan’s goal of allocating more than 3% of GDP to defense spending. Opposition lawmakers are questioning the scale of the commitments as the deal heads to the legislature for review.
