Taiwan’s Presidential Office says the country will not give up democracy under the threat of force, responding to a Reuters report citing US officials’ latest assessment of the risk of a Chinese invasion. According to the report, some US officials now view an invasion before 2028 as less likely, after earlier warnings that 2027 could be a high-risk year. Sources cited by Reuters said Beijing is waiting to see the outcome of Taiwan’s 2028 presidential election, and that tensions could rise if President Lai Ching-te wins re-election. China claims Taiwan as its own and has not ruled out taking it by force.
