Philippines Says Chinese Research Vessel Leaves Waters Near Batanes

The Philippine Coast Guard says it is driving away a Chinese research vessel operating in waters near Batanes province, off Taiwan’s southern coast. Authorities deployed their largest patrol vessel and an aircraft to challenge the ship, which had been in the area since Monday. A Chinese coast guard vessel later arrived and appeared to shield the research vessel, according to Philippine officials. The Philippines says the vessel has now moved away and will continue to be monitored until it leaves the country’s exclusive economic zone. China says the research vessel was operating in accordance with international law.
