Taiwan Coast Guard Calls China’s Festival Greetings 'Cognitive Warfare'

Taiwan’s coast guard has dismissed a Mid-Autumn Festival greeting from China’s coast guard as an act of “cognitive warfare.” The response came after Taiwanese authorities received a video filmed by Chinese coast guard personnel while operating in restricted waters near Taiwan’s outlying Kinmen Islands. In the video, Chinese officers wish their Taiwanese counterparts a happy Mid-Autumn Festival and express hope to “reunite soon.” Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and regularly conducts what it calls law enforcement patrols near the country. Taiwan says Chinese vessels entered its restricted waters 46 times in 2025 and 35 times so far this year under that pretext.
