Taiwan's Labor Minister Makes Rare Visit to China for APEC Meeting

Taiwan's labor minister, Hung Sun-han, attended an APEC ministerial meeting in Nanjing on Monday, becoming the first sitting Cabinet-level official to visit China since the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) returned to power in Taiwan in 2016. APEC is one of the few international organizations in which Taiwan participates as a full member, using the name Chinese Taipei. Taiwan’s participation in this year’s forum had been uncertain because the event is being hosted by China. Beijing has previously blocked Taiwan’s presidents from attending APEC summits, making Hung’s visit a notable development in cross-strait and international engagement.
