Taiwan’s top shuttler Chou Tien-chen has won the men’s singles at the 2026 China Open, a Badminton World Federation Super 1000 tournament.
The world number-6 beat France’s Toma Junior Popov 2-1 in the final. It’s Chou’s second Super 1000 title after winning the Indonesia Open in 2019. The 36-year old also made history as the oldest men’s singles player to win a title at this level. Some players in Taipei are praising him, highlighting his age and a previous cancer diagnosis.

I believe the country is proud of Chou's performance. Because having played for so long and having been diagnosed with cancer (a few years ago) he’s still able to produce these results. At 36, a player is considered a veteran. But because nutrition and training are better these days we’re seeing more players going on into their thirties.

I find (Chou’s performance) inspiring because he was able to win a title at his age. And because he could become champion while also apparently fighting illness.
Chou is set to compete in the Taipei Open this week and the Asian Games in Japan this September.
