REPORTER:
Top badminton athletes from around the world are facing off in the southern port city of Kaohsiung. Almost 300 players from 15 countries are battling for glory here at the Victor Kaohsiung Masters 2025.
Badminton is one of the most popular sports in Taiwan. In recent years, the country’s athletes have made a strong mark on the world stage, led by stars such as Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Tai Tzu-ying, as well as the men’s doubles pair, Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin, who won gold at the Paris Olympics.
I play badminton myself so I follow badminton-related competitions.
I hope more of these competitions can be held in Taiwan. Taiwan’s performance in badminton is actually quite good so I hope the sport can develop even further.
I have been playing badminton for five years. At first, it was for my health. But later it was to lose weight.
There are more badminton courts popping up in Kaohsiung. More people are playing and it’s hard to book a court.

He says he hopes to defend the championship in Kaohsiung.
Last year, Taiwan bagged 3 gold and 4 silver medals.
The competition runs through September 28, and Taiwan's athletes are aiming to keep as many gold medals as possible on home soil.
