Coast Guard Warns Chinese Vessel

The Coast Guard says it shadowed a Chinese vessel, and warned it away from Taiwan’s restricted waters on Thursday night.

The Chinese research vessel Tong Ji was spotted northwest of Huayu in Taiwan's offshore Penghu islands. Media reports said it was suspected of conducting maritime surveillance. Chinese research vessels can collect environmental data, map the seabed, and identify undersea infrastructure, capabilities that may also have military applications. Taipei views such operations as part of Beijing’s broader gray-zone pressure campaign.
