Foreign Ministry Slams Malaysia PM For China Unification Remarks

Taiwan's foreign ministry has pushed back against Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's remarks that Taiwan is a part of China. Ibrahim made the comments in an interview with Al Jazeera earlier this week. When asked if he would condone China retaking Taiwan by force, Anwar used a hypothetical situation in Malaysia, saying he would support the use of force for unification of a breakway territory. The foreign ministry says that showing too much support for China could affect Taiwanese business interests in Malaysia.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry has refuted remarks from Malaysia’s Prime Minister who said that Taiwan is a part of China.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made the comments in an interview with Al Jazeera earlier this week. He also said that he would support the use of force for unification of a breakaway territory, using Malaysia as an example. Taiwan's foreign ministry responded that as the leader of a democratic country, Anwar should uphold human rights and the rule of law. The ministry added that Anwar’s pro-Beijing remarks could affect Taiwanese investment in the southeast Asian nation.
