Report: Sony, TSMC Plan US$6.3B Investment in Image Sensor Joint Venture

Sony and TSMC are reportedly planning to invest more than US$6.3 billion in a joint venture to produce next-generation image sensors, according to Nikkei Asia. The Sony-majority-owned operation will use TSMC's manufacturing expertise to upgrade an existing Sony plant in Kumamoto, Japan. The sensors will first power cameras in Apple's iPhones before moving into physical AI applications for robotics and vehicles, with commercial production targeted for as early as 2029.

Sony and TSMC are reportedly planning to invest more than 6.3 billion US dollars in a joint venture to produce next-generation image sensors.

The two companies plan to produce the sensors using TSMC's manufacturing expertise to upgrade an existing Sony plant in Kumamoto, Japan. The Sony-majority-owned venture aims to start commercial production as early as 2029, first powering cameras in Apple's iPhones, before moving into physical AI applications for robotics and vehicles. Both companies declined to comment on the joint venture first announced in May.
