Taiwanese chip giant UMC has unveiled a major expansion plan, raising its capital spending to $2 billion US dollars to meet growing AI demand.
The company says the expansion includes the construction of a new wafer fab in southern Taiwan, and additional cleanroom capacity at its Singapore fab to support silicon photonics production. UMC reported second-quarter revenue of around $2.2 billion US dollars, up 17% year on year. It says it expects strong ICT, electronics and AI demand. Company shares surged to the daily limit on Thursday.
