Why does this puppet show have its own DJ? Are live puppet shows still a thing? They certainly are in the city of Yunlin, Taiwan. Jenny is invited to host the Yunlin International Puppet Theater Festival in Yunlin, Taiwan. But when she gets there, she discovers the festival involves much more than traditional puppet performances. Instead, the show is a dazzling display of elaborate, handcrafted works of art that come to life in the hands of puppeteers. Fierce battles and romantic love scenes are reenacted against a backdrop of… electronic music? What’s that doing there? The show has its own DJ and even has custom tracks specially created for the event. The EDM tracks are remixes of traditional puppet show songs. In Yunlin, these songs are reimagined for the 21st century, drawing crowds of young fans to join in the festivities. Although puppetry may seem like a fading art, Taiwan’s ingenious craftsmen and community members are constantly inventing new ways to attract audiences and carry the craft into the future.
