Graffiti artists from the U.S. connected with Taiwan’s youth through aerosol art at the Next Level hip hop culture exchange. Come hear what Taiwan graffiti artists and students think about hip hop and the significance behind graffiti art! Although these colorful images on city walls are seen as artworks today, the history of graffiti art reveals that the practice originated from youth who wanted to express themselves with the written word. Ththeir mark on their neighborhoods by writing their names or tags in spray paint. Next Level site manager Phes explains that this impulse to express themselves exists in youth all over the world. After traveling to many countries with Next Level, he recognizes many similarities between youth across the world, including Taiwanese. The Next Level cultural exchange highlights these similarities by bringing together like-minded people to share hip hop culture. In this episode, Jenny meets Taiwanese graffiti students who exhibit their artworks and share the inspiration behind them. She even learns the basics of graffiti and leaves her own mark on the event.
