Mia and Natalie are exploring indigenous culture at Taromak: the only traditional East Rukai settlement in Taitung, Taiwan. This escape into nature offers a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the Rukai people and their way of life. On a scale of super cozy to adventurous, this is definitely an adventure! It’s almost like camping in a unique Taiwanese way. The girls begin by trying on indigenous clothing with a hundred pacer snake pattern. The hundred pacer snake is a spiritual guardian of the Rukai people that helps make sure things are off to a good start. Everyone is also careful to leave an offering of betel nuts and kaoliang rice wine to the ancestors at the gate before settling in for a night at the Rukai man gather house. The man gather house is a traditional Rukai home for the unmarried men of the community. The village now uses this area for cultural preservation efforts but also for educational purposes too. There are plenty of activities to explore like survival skills or cooking in an earth oven. After a hearty dinner made from locally sourced ingredients, get ready to fall asleep to the sounds of nature.
