Mia and Natalie are exploring Hakka country! Luo Wu Academy is a traditional courtyard style home in Guanxi, Taiwan. Elderly residents affectionately call this area “The Town of Longevity” beside the Fengshan River. The journey begins with a bicycle rental at Raknus Selu Trail Stop 13 and then onto Guanxi Public Market to try some traditional Hakka desserts. Luo Academy is covered with intricate carvings, pictures, and writing reflecting 100 years of local history. The first, second, and third buildings are connected but there’s no fourth wall. The partially enclosed courtyard is a distinctive aspect of the architecture that harkens back to a simpler time. It’s a bit of a hidden gem that you might not otherwise find on your trip to Hsinchu. Food is such an important part of Taiwanese culture. The simplest way to connect with a particular place is to sample the local cuisine or street food. Mia was glad to reconnect with her roots by sharing traditional desserts like Mugwort rice cakes with dried shredded reddish. A trip through the market is full of local ingredients perfect for homestyle cooking. Don’t knock it until you try it!
