The British domestic intelligence agency MI5 is warning UK universities that more than 100 academics may have unknowingly assisted Chinese espionage efforts. MI5 says researchers may have contributed to projects funded by a front company linked to China’s Ministry of State Security. The work reportedly involved artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and covert communications technologies. MI5 said the research could directly strengthen China’s espionage capabilities and warned that continuing such ties may expose academics to criminal liability.
