US, Japan, Australia Joint Drills Simulate Response to Enemy Landing in Japan

More than 6,000 troops have taken part in a trilateral command post exercise by Japan, the US and Australia.

The three countries kicked off the Yama Sakura 91 exercise in Japan on September 2, simulating a scenario where enemy forces land in Japan. The exercise incorporates AI and a so-called “kill web” linking sensors, command systems and weapons across sea, air, land, space and information domains.

Officials did not identify the simulated adversary, but Japanese media say the exercise is being held against the backdrop of growing threats from China and Russia. The drills will run through September 10th.
