Search and rescue operations in parts of Nepal were temporarily halted on Saturday due to bad weather, as the death toll from Wednesday’s devastating flash floods continued to climb.
The disaster has killed at least 600 people in Nepal and seven in Tibet, with nearly 3,000 people still missing, including more than 500 foreigners. Nepal is seeking technical assistance to restore transport and communications, identify victims and conduct DNA testing. Two upstream lakes are being closely monitored, with officials warning that flood risks will persist until both have fully drained. Nepal’s finance minister said the country may need $4 billion to $5 billion US dollars to rebuild.
