Japanese Lawmakers Rename Taiwan Caucus To Reflect Closer Ties

A group of Japanese lawmakers focused on relations with Taiwan has renamed itself the “Japan-Taiwan Diet Members' Consultative Council,” replacing its previous reference to the “Republic of China.”

Japanese lawmakers have renamed a legislative caucus to include the name "Taiwan."

The caucus, which focuses on relations with Taiwan, is now called the “Japan-Taiwan Diet Members’ Consultative Council.” Previously, the name “Republic of China” was used.

The change reflects a push by Japanese lawmakers for a clear strategic partnership with Taiwan, according to Kyodo News.

President Lai Ching-te offered his thanks to the group for supporting Taiwan.

In facing China's continued authoritarian expansion and its attempts to alter the rules-based international order like-minded nations like Taiwan and Japan must uphold the values of democracy and freedom. Only through unity, cooperation, and forging partnerships can we meet the various threats and challenges we face.

The caucus first formed in 1973 and now represents 40 percent of the Japanese Diet.
