Lai Attends Ceremony To Name Two New Marine Research Vessels

President Lai Ching-te has attended a ceremony in Kaohsiung to name two survey vessels that will join Taiwan's marine research fleet when completed. The two boats have been named in honor of renowned oil painter Chen Cheng-po, who was killed in the 228 Incident in 1947. The data the new boats gather will inform maritime policy, security efforts and scientific research.

For Taiwan, the ocean is key
to economic development
energy transition, ecological conservation
and national security.
The 100-ton and 300-ton vessels have been named in honor of Chen Cheng-po, a renowned oil painter who was killed in the 228 Incident of 1947. When finished, they will carry out surveys to help with maritime policy and security, and scientific research. The boats are expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2027. A 4,000-ton survey vessel is also in the works.
