Some Australians say fears of repercussions from China are discouraging public support for Taiwan, even in cultural and community settings. Members of Australia's Taiwanese community told TaiwanPlus that concerns about careers, travel, and political pressure are contributing to self-censorship. The issue has also been raised before an Australian Senate inquiry examining transnational repression and foreign interference. Community leaders point to China's ethnic unity law, which took effect in July, as another source of concern. Experts say direct threats are not always necessary. They warn that fear alone can influence behavior, shape public engagement, and affect how Australians interact with Taiwan and issues related to China.
