The Philippines is exploring deeper cooperation with Taiwan to help protect undersea internet cables, according to Philippines Deputy Ambassador to the US Felipe F. Carino III. Speaking Wednesday at a think tank discussion on security threats in the South China Sea, Carino said the process could begin with knowledge-sharing and capacity building. He did not confirm whether joint maritime patrols are under consideration. Carino also said Manila’s “one China” policy would not prevent what he described as a “pragmatic and practical approach” to working with Taiwan. In recent years, multiple submarine cables connected to Taiwan have been damaged by China-linked ships.
