Taiwan’s artificial intelligence boom is putting new pressure on the national electricity supply, prompting calls for greater investment in power generation from the private sector. Tseng Wen-sheng, chair of the state-owned Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), says companies cannot rely solely on the public utility to meet all electricity demand. His remarks follow reports that Taipower is in talks with major technology customers including TSMC about investing in their own power-generating facilities. With AI driving unpredictable swings in electricity demand, companies and power producers face decisions over how to finance new capacity. Potential additions could include both renewable energy and increased use of fossil fuels.
