Taiwan Reaches Offshore Wind Milestone but Demand Is Rising Fast
Taiwan has installed its 500th offshore wind turbine, marking a major milestone in the country's renewable energy transition. But meeting future demand remains a challenge. While the government has a goal of 100% green energy for industry by 2040, major tech companies are expected to require significantly more electricity in the coming years.

Taiwan now ranks 5th globally in offshore wind capacity, as TSMC and other tech leaders race to achieve 100% green energy for industry by 2040.
The country has installed its 500th offshore wind turbine, bringing its green energy generation to 38.6 billion kilowatt-hours – nearly 20 billion over current corporate demand. However, with companies in its tech sector looking to convert fully to green energy, Taiwan still needs to increase output. Chipmaker TSMC currently consumes about nine percent of Taiwan’s electricity, and that will increase as new plants come online. TSMC says its electricity will come from state power provider Taipower, but critics say the company should take more responsibility for its energy demands.
