Taiwan's top trade representative, Yang Jen-ni, bullied her late deputy Yen Huai-shing, according to an investigation by the Cabinet. The report says Yang shut down Yen's ideas at work using offensive language, creating a hostile work environment that could be considered workplace bullying. Yen took leave for health reasons last year before officially resigning in March, just weeks before she died aged 53.

Crackdown on Workplace Bullying

A Cabinet investigation found that Taiwan’s top trade representative, Yang Jen-ni, bullied her deputy Yen Huai-shing who died in March.

Yang and Yen worked closely as part of the team negotiating tariffs with the US. In September last year, 53-year old Yen took leave for health reasons, and officially resigned at the beginning of March. The investigation was based on interviews with Yen’s colleagues and cell phone messages. Yang responded to the probe, saying it was one-sided and called for further investigation. The Premier is expected to make a decision on her position next week.

The high-profile case comes amid nationwide efforts to stamp out bullying in the workplace. New rules strengthening channels for employees to report misconduct take effect on July 1.
