Lawmakers Delay US$6.6 Billion Drone Budget

Taiwan's legislature has postponed consideration of a proposed US$6.6 billion special budget to expand the country's drone capabilities. According to the defense ministry, the proposal would fund the purchase of more than 200,000 drones through 2031.

The opposition-controlled legislature voted to delay reviewing a special budget bill for drone purchases.

 

The Cabinet originally put forward the roughly US$6.6 billion-dollar proposal. Lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party voted to send the bill to committee, but opposition lawmakers from both the Kuomintang and the Taiwan People's Party said their parties would each propose alternative bills. The defense ministry has said the cabinet's proposal would pay for more than 200,000 drones up to 2031.
