Ceramic Artists Discover Unique Clay Born From Deadly Hualien Floods

Devastating floods ravaged communities in eastern Taiwan in 2025. Now, ceramic artists are blending silt from the flooded river into clay, adding unique traits to their medium.

This tea set is no ordinary one. Its unique, magnetic silt was born out of floodwaters, artists call "Guangfu Reclaimed Clay.”

 

When the soil temperature is only 1,220 degrees Celsius we must use sand to match the temperature of the soil. We don't need to add any external flux. We simply add the soil to the sand which lowers the sand’s temperature creating an isothermal layer between the two.

 

On the one hand, this can remove the riverbed’s silt and sand. Secondly, it also helps the local area. Based on their existing industries, it allows them to further optimize.
