US Representative Young Kim Urges Support for Taiwan's Bid To Join IMF

Taiwan's foreign ministry has thanked US Representative Young Kim, who recently visited the country, for advocating for its membership in the International Monetary Fund at a congressional hearing. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was there to hear Kim who called for US advocacy on Taiwan's behalf.

The foreign ministry has thanked US representative Young Kim for supporting Taiwan’s bid to join the International Monetary Fund.

Young Kim (US REPRESENTATIVE):  
We’ve been talking to Taiwanese government officials and as they get ready to formally submit a request to join IMF, I hope US will use our voice to support their petition to join or encourage them to do so as soon as possible.

REPORTER:  
In a congressional hearing with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent present, Kim said the Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act stipulates that the US must advocate for Taiwan’s membership in the IMF. Kim said supporting Taiwan is important for countering China’s economic coercion. Taiwan has the 22nd largest economy in the world.
