US Arms Sales to Taiwan Vital for Island's Defense, Taiwan's Representative Says
REPORTER:
Taiwan’s Representative to the United States says that American arms sales are vital for Taiwan to keep China at bay.
Alexander Yui (TAIWAN REPRESENTATIVE TO US):
"We need those arms for defensive purposes. The Chinese aggression is growing, and according to the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States is legally, by this law, should provide arm sales to Taiwan as needed."
REPORTER:
Yui was speaking to the Associated Press and responding to questions about US policy towards Taiwan. Following May’s summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Trump called US arms sales to Taiwan a good “negotiating chip” in talks with China. Yui however said that the US’ Taiwan policy has not changed. He stressed that arms sales are vital for Taiwan to bolster its own defense in the face of China’s increasing aggression.
