Ocean: Sea Turtles Laying Eggs
Sea turtles are seen as living fossils, having changed little over thousands of years. Though they live in the ocean, they must lay eggs on land. Mother sea turtles leave the water at night and dig a nest in the sand, called a clutch. Here she lays, on average, 110 eggs. The baby turtles breathe through their eggshells before hatching. Oxygen passes through the eggshell and its membrane. After fifty days, the young turtles hatch and return to the ocean.
