Wild Birds: Taiwan Yuhina and Taiwan Cherry

The Taiwan yuhina (冠羽畫眉) is happiest every year during January’s Taiwan cherry blooming season. That is because for at least two months during this season, mountains in Taiwan from south to north, from foot to summit, are filled with blossoming Taiwan cherries, allowing these nectar-loving birds to find trees full of flowers everywhere, presenting them with fine, sweet drinks. Even if all flowers are hanging upside down like bells, it is no problem for these nimble birds. The most prominent feature on the Taiwan yuhina is its prominent and striking mohawk. Along with its lively, active nature and fondness for the Taiwan cherry blossom, if one were to choose from among over 600 bird species recorded in Taiwan the cutest and most Taiwanese birds, the Taiwan yuhina would definitely be among them. In fact, not only do these birds love to suckle on nectar, they love berries, too. So whenever berries are ripe in the forest, they are almost always sure to appear with their friends, and enjoy a feast as a flock.
