Two men were jailed in the UK after being convicted of spying for China. It's believed to be the first case in the UK where people have been convicted for espionage on behalf of Beijing.

Two British nationals, including a former UK border control officer, were jailed on Thursday for spying on behalf of Chinese authorities.

 

Chung Biu Yuen and Chi Leung Wai were convicted for conducting surveillance on pro-democracy Hong Kong activists living in Britain. The men are believed to be the first individuals convicted of spying for China in Britain. Both denied the charges. China's embassy in London dismissed the case as a "political move" and an abuse of the law.

Chung Biu Yuen and Chi Leung Wai were convicted of spying on and targeting pro-activists advocating for democracy in Hong Kong and China. The two are said to have assisted foreign intelligence services to surveil their targets. The case is believed to be the first that resulted in the conviction of people spying for China in the UK. Both men are dual Chinese and UK citizens and have denied the accusations. Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy in London called the case a ‘political move of abusing the law.’
