Spain, France Hit With Wildfires Amid Growing Heatwaves

Homes in western Madrid were engulfed in flames on Friday as Spain declared its first-ever national wildfire emergency. In southwest France, another wildfire erupted near a popular tourist destination. Both countries have sought EU assistance as they struggle to contain the blazes.

Parts of Spain and France are on fire after a rise in heatwaves and wildfires in Europe in recent months.

Homes in western Madrid were seen engulfed in flames on Friday. The country declared its first-ever national wildfire emergency over the crisis. Spain has seen more than 29 major fires so far this year, with the affected area five times larger than the record-breaking damage reported in 2025.
