Japan’s meteorological agency has issued a tsunami warning for a wave of up to a meter in some areas. Taiwan chip giant TSMC has one functioning plant in the region and a second under construction. The company says it's evacuating staff for their safety. TSMC shares fell almost US$11 US dollars in pre-market trading, amid worries of a possible short-term shutdown.
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck Japan's southern Kumamoto prefecture on Tuesday, knocking out power to thousands of homes, stopping rail services and triggering warnings for tsunamis and aftershocks.
A tsunami warning for a wave measuring 1 meter (3.28 ft) was issued after the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
