REPORTER:
Several Taiwanese media organizations have been recognized at the SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence, one of the most prestigious journalism awards in the Asia-Pacific region.
Investigative news outlet The Reporter received nine honors, including four Awards for Excellence and five Honorable Mentions.
TaiwanPlus’s news documentary, “Finding Formosa” won an Award for Excellence in Video Reporting, marking the platform’s first SOPA Award since its launch in 2021.
Judges praised the winning episode, titled “What Matters More: Indigenous Culture or Animal Rights?” as “beautifully filmed.” They commended its use of diverse voices to explore debates surrounding Indigenous rights, environmental protection and Taiwan’s legal system.
According to the judges:
A beautifully filmed video. The Talum interview itself is a masterclass in lighting, composition, and sound bite selection. The producers' lack of traditional narration was effective, with a solid cast of characters representing the various voices in this debate. While this case centers on Taiwan's laws, it has some global resonance as states weigh their own tensions between environmental and indigenous considerations.
