Several Injured in ‘Bombing of Master Han Dan’ Tradition
A unique Lantern Festival tradition in southeastern Taiwan called the “Bombing of Master Han Dan” plays host to human representatives of the wealth god who face firecracker blasts in the name of prosperity. This year's procession has sent a few to the hospital for serious burns.
Crackling firecrackers and clouds of smoke engulf this man here to represent a god of wealth.
The Bombing of Master Han Dan is an explosive Lantern Festival tradition in southeastern Taiwan, and one of Taiwan’s top three folk custom events.
Locals believe that the stronger the blasts, the greater the prosperity.
The human stand-ins for the master are mainly volunteers who undergo careful physical and mental tests before being blown up.
Normally, the bombing is fine for me.
The only real issue is the smoke.
That’s why when I was up there
I kept my head pointed upward.
I was trying to get some fresh air.
It’s a thrilling activity that’s attracted tourists from Taiwan and the world, but it’s still a dangerous one.
Every year, many Han Dan proxies are sent to the hospital after serious burns in the immediate line of fire. This year, one proxy even ended up with second-degree burns.
Spectators are also urged to keep a safe distance and wear protective gear.
Still, it’s a tradition some here intend to keep.
It’s a very good tradition
carried on for generations
by Taitung's Hsuanwu Temple.
We’re here to witness it.
The atmosphere’s just great.
Apart from all the explosions at the Taitung event, 76 local temples take a calmer, less bombastic approach by joining in on a Lantern Festival pilgrimage, clearing away evil spirits and praying for a good year.
