Missing Taiwan Citizens in China

Five more Taiwanese citizens have been reported missing in China over the past week.
The figure comes from a weekly safety report from Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, which handles relations with China. The bulletin said two other Taiwanese citizens had their freedoms restricted. The council says 426 Taiwanese citizens have been reported missing, questioned, or detained in China, Hong Kong, and Macao since January 2024.
China is preparing to expand screening of people leaving the country starting September 15. Taiwan warns that the new measures are vague and highly arbitrary, potentially increasing safety risks for Taiwanese traveling across the strait.
In its latest weekly safety report on Taiwanese traveling to China, Hong Kong and Macao, the Mainland Affairs Council, Taiwan’s government agency handling cross-strait affairs, said the number of Taiwanese reported missing in China increased by five from the previous week, while two more were reported to have had their personal freedom restricted, bringing the total number of new cases to seven.
