Lai Marks 39 Years Since End of Martial Law With Warning on China
President Lai Ching-te on Wednesday marked the 39th anniversary of the lifting of martial law in Taiwan. He warned that China is seeking to erode Taiwan's confidence in democracy through military intimidation, gray-zone harassment and cognitive warfare, and said the country must remain steadfast against authoritarian threats.

President Lai Ching-te on Wednesday marked the 39th anniversary of the lifting of martial law in Taiwan.
Lai warned of threats from China, saying Beijing aims to erode Taiwan’s confidence in democracy through military intimidation, gray-zone harassment and cognitive warfare.
He said regardless of where authoritarian threats come from, the country must remain steadfast.
Martial law lasted for 38 years in Taiwan, one of the longest periods of repressive military rule in modern history.
