Prosecutors Seek Detention of Manager Connected to Tainted Cooking Oil Case

Prosecutors are seeking the detention of a general manager of the Central Union Oil Corporation, which supplied cooking oil containing illegal levels of a carcinogen. Ten other people connected to the case have been released on bail.

Prosecutors are requesting the detention of the general manager of a company that supplied cooking oil containing illegal levels of a carcinogen.
The Taichung District Prosecutors’ Office allege the manager of the Central Union Oil Corporation tried to falsify or destroy evidence connected to the case. 1,300 tons of the tainted soybean oil went out to restaurants and school lunch programs. The company has been fined $5 million US dollars.
Investigators searched several locations connected to four companies – and brought the manager and ten other people in for questioning. They are all suspected of violating food safety laws. The other ten were released on bail.
