The tourism industry has everything to do with finance. In 2022, the global travel and tourism industry directly contributed to 7.7 trillion USD of the global GDP, and that’s not even a significant amount when compared to pre-pandemic levels. But the amount of trash it creates for our environment is also just as sizeable. In our original docuseries 'Our Ocean: The Fight for Sustainability,' we revealed that the idea of sustainable tourism and ecotourism has been implemented in parts of Taiwan and around the world for a while now. The preservation of our natural environment is a clear goal through this new mindset, but it’s not enough. In the episode, Richard Foster, a birdwatching guide of decades in Taiwan, and Dr. Yi-huang “Victor” Tao, the director of Green Tourism Association of Taiwan, share their view of how the island nation has been successful in making tourism green, while also pointing out what the key problems are of modern-day travelers. As Taiwan's presidential election rolls around, we hope this discussion provides insight into topics that matter for the nation and the rest of the world.
