At the Austrian classical music festival Styriarte, Taiwanese-American conductor Mei-Ann Chen conducts the Styriarte Youth Orchestra, performing Beethoven’s masterpiece Symphony No.3 “Eroica.” Comprised of talented young musicians from different backgrounds, Styriarte Youth Orchestra performs to honor the French Revolution on July 14, the day French citizens stormed the Bastille. Performed on July 14, the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille, this monumental interpretation of Beethoven’s “Eroica” reflects the enduring human pursuit of liberty, democracy, and collective hope. Under Mei-Ann Chen’s passionate and electrifying direction, young musicians from around the world come together in a powerful artistic dialogue that transcends borders and generations. Born and educated in Taiwan before rising to international acclaim, Mei-Ann Chen is celebrated worldwide for her expressive artistry and dynamic presence on the podium. She has conducted more than 150 orchestras globally, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony. Her interpretation of Beethoven’s revolutionary masterpiece reflects the spirit of artistic freedom, openness, and cultural exchange that Taiwan continues to champion on the world stage. Through music, “Eroica” becomes more than a symphony — it becomes a reflection on humanity’s resilience, dignity, and aspiration for freedom.
