Brandon O'Neal, African American-Taiwanese comedian, influencer and proud "blasian," sets out on a comedic journey to discover remnants of Hsinchu's past with the help of artificial intelligence. Fragments of Taiwan's history are all around us, so why does AI always recommend the same old boring things to do in Taiwan? Ignoring ChatGPT's lame sightseeing advice, Brandon heads to Hsinchu's City God Temple for a bowl of some good ol' pork fat rice… I mean… to pray! He stumbles across a nifty old glove puppet troupe performing near the temple, just like they did in the old days. He even goes out of his way to find the oldest escalator in Hsinchu, which is… maybe not worth visiting? Brandon steps into a local shop to see Taiwan's traditional crafts, which leads him on a journey into Hsinchu's glassmaking and glassblowing community, some of the few remaining professional glassworkers in Taiwan. Not only does Hsinchu produce most of Taiwan's new glass, but the city is also home to Taiwan's largest glass-recycling facility. These literal fragments of Taiwan's daily life are reworked into products that are beautiful, useful and environmentally friendly. Brandon tries out glassblowing and contributes his own unique fragment to Taiwan's craft culture.
