Have you noticed that AI is making online travel recommendations more and more generic? It’s a difficult problem to solve, but comedian and host Brandon O’Neal is taking on the challenge. Let Brandon take you on a journey into the lesser-known corners of this beautiful island to meet fascinating people and learn more about Taiwan’s local nature, culture and history. In episode 1, a desire to go off the beaten path and experience the wild side of Taiwan leads Brandon to Pingtung, where he meets Wenjun, a member of Taiwan’s Indigenous Paiwan community. Wen-jun teaches Brandon how to live off the land by introducing the diverse flora and fauna in the mountains above Wenle Village. Wen-jun shows Brandon around his organic coffee farm and they explore sustainable farming and traditional uses for local plants. Brandon then learns Indigenous hunting techniques from a seasoned hunter, mastering the bow and arrow and understanding the cultural significance of the hunt. But when he fails to hunt down a wild boar, Brandon’s grumbling belly leads him to nearby Chaozhou Town, where he tries a dessert known as “cold hot ice” and discovers the art of rattan weaving. At the end of the day, Brandon helps Wen-jun teach local kids about sustainable living, ending with a feast and new-found knowledge about truly living wild.
