The Austronesian Craft of Turning Tree Bark Into Textile - CRAFTSOUL Ep1
Austronesian people in Taiwan have a great many applications of tree bark, and one of them is turning tree bark into textile. Instead of shredding bark and recomposing it as fabric, Taiwanese Austronesians widen and attenuate bark through hammering, allowing bark to preserve its natural texture even when expanded. Now a new generation of Taiwanese Austronesian applies this ancient technique to making everyday objects of modern life. From lighting fixture to clothing, the traditional Austronesian way lives on in new forms.
