My Scientist Friend: The Father of Shrimp Farming Industry - Liao I-chiu
Liao I-chiu’s enduring legacy is Taiwan’s shrimp farming industry. His passion for shrimp farming was sparked by watching the fish during the cleaning of a fishpond on the property of his family. He once worked almost nonstop in a laboratory for a week just to figure out the eating habits of kuruma shrimp (Penaeus japonicus). His study on grass shrimp (Penaeus monodon) farming allowed fishers to operate like animal farmers without having to sail out to sea every time they need to catch shrimp, greatly improving their safety and increasing their income.
