The city of Hualien on Taiwan's east coast could soon lose its only domestic air connections as aviation authorities review applications from two airlines seeking to suspend their routes, citing a lack of passengers and financial losses. Hualien officials and tourism operators warn that losing air service could hurt tourism and reduce transportation options during natural disasters. The transportation ministry says it would activate land, sea and air transportation in an emergency, even if the flight suspensions are approved.
