US House Speaker Mike Johnson says Taiwan should remain stable and independent, and that Washington’s support for the country's defense has not changed. Speaking to FOX Business, Johnson made the remarks following last week’s meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. He also addressed a US$14 billion arms package for Taiwan that is awaiting approval, saying he expects the US to finalize as much as US$40 billion in arms sales to Taiwan across Trump’s two terms. Trump has previously described arms sales to Taiwan as a useful negotiating tool with China.
