President Lai Ching-te marked Armed Forces Day on Thursday, paying tribute to fallen service members at the Martyrs’ Shrine in Taipei.

In a social media post, Lai also thanked Taiwan's military and their families. He said a nation’s people form the core of its defense and noted that military salaries will rise by 4 percent starting in January. He also said the government has expanded childcare and family support for the troops. Taiwan’s Armed Forces Day marks the Allied victory over Japan in 1945.
