Taiwan's military has begun a new round of joint defense exercises designed to strengthen its ability to keep fighting even if key command centers are knocked out. Defense analyst Su Tzu-yun says the drills differ from previous combat readiness exercises by integrating armor, artillery, infantry, drones, air force, navy, and coastal defense units within each operational area. Rather than relying on a single command structure, each war zone is trained to function as an independent fighting force.

Taiwan's military started joint defense exercises set to run through Friday.

These exercises fall in between a previous round of combat readiness drills in June and the large-scale annual Han Kuang drills set to take place in August. The defense ministry said the exercises' goal is to prepare troops for joint operations and decentralized commands to strengthen combat capabilities and defensive operations.
